Hi there...
Any recommendations of who can service my van? '74 Bay.
The MOT is due soon and the guy who usually helps me is flat out.
Tbh there shouldn't be too much involved however I have a small issue when starting the van and don't really have the means to ensure the brakes, headlights are ok in time for the MOT.

Hey, What's the symptoms of the starting issue? See if anyone on here can maybe suggest a fix.
As for brakes and lights any normal mechanic should be able to sort you out, my brother in law works on a variety of old cars and is based in Lurgan, welcome to pass on his number if it's of interest. Chris

I got a new starter motor last year and an alternator conversion. ..and I've been told it's possibly because of the very square edged teeth not engaging properly when I first turn the key that it doesn't start. If I then turn the fly wheel/fan belt a few times it seems to engage them and it then starts. Pretty much every time I try to start the van this happens. ...and pretty much every time I turn it at the engine, it starts straight away. So guaranteed when I take it for MOT when the inspector tries to start it, it won't work. Does that make sense? Hard to explain. Any new numbers/contacts gratefully received

That's really odd... So... When you start it normally, the starter spins, it just doesn't engage?
What if you spin the stater...let it sit a moment then spin it again?
I've had my bug not start at mot... The guy flooded it and they let me fiddle with it and got me to start it...its a bit pants but I think as long as it starts and drives out the other side its alright... Its an old car most have a bit of grace.
Same, last few mot of mine they haven't checked my headlight alignment... Just that they work.
Guess its who you get.
I'll send you through my brother in laws number, he's a bit old fashioned in his ways so may be able to help out. Else I'm sure Philip might know someone to give you a hand too.

Yep doesn't engage..just click. But after turning the fan pulley a couple of turns, it starts.
Thought maybe something to do with the spacers...after the alternator conversion was done.
Unfortunately I don't have full knowledge on how best to remedy it.

Hey hey,
I'm back, I don't think the alternator would effect the engine starting... you could take the fan belt off, So the engine is not connected to completely rule it out.

Hey hey, I was talking to Philip last night and we came to the conclusion that the issue could be your starter... the solenoid sounds like its sticking.
If the solenoid was firing every time but not catching it would make a terrible noise trying to catch against the teeth.
Spinning the pulley is freeing it allowing it to fire the second time.
We both recon that even though its been changed, it would be worth while trying another one.

If you cant check the brakes and headlights yourself just put it through anyway. Let the mot tell you if there is something wrong

He managed to fit me in and got it serviced....only to break down on the way home.
Well I say break down I had to stop at B&Q and had the same starting problem...except this time was completely dead...nothing at all.
Long story short it transpires the problem was entirely the power lead to the starter motor...over the years and after much rattling the cable had worn away, basically 3 strands of wire left....just snapped
